Recombinant Room

Recombinant Room
Seating Sytem
The Recombinant Room is a modular home/office furniture system that can be configured to accommodate a large variety of space programming requirements. The system can create gathering spaces or private areas and can also define the flow through a given space. Although the first prototype was commissioned by a private client as a custom piece, the design was driven with the idea that the system could be produced in higher quantities.

The Recombinant Room's clean and structural, yet warm aesthetic is expressed with a varied palette of materials. The vertical structural elements are water jet cut from 6061 aluminum plate and clear anodized. Stainless steel tierods provide horizontal support between uprights. All the platforms are made from Plyboo, a bamboo plywood with a distinctive grain pattern created by the rings in the bamboo grass. The seat cushions capture impressions on their plush Ultrasuede upholstery.

Accessory components build on the same structural and material language as the main components. Legs from the 'Table for Seven' can attach to the back of a seat unit, creating a typing height table. The reclining lounge backs are upholstered in a persimmon Una, a neoprene like fabric from Knoll Textiles that conforms to the biomorphic contours padding. A storage cabinet that rests atop a corner unit is constructed out of the same Plyboo as the platforms.

As a designer and production manager at Randolph Designs, I was involved in the conceptual and technical design of every facet of the project. After creating design sketches, 3D models, full size mock-ups, and CAD shop drawings I coordinated with a multitude of vendors and fabricators to realize the project.
